Metalpoint Drawing: A Figure Study

This is a metalpoint drawing. Image size is 8″x10″. This drawing was made with 24 karat gold and aluminum wires on an aluminum sheet that was coated with specially prepared metalpoint ground.

The first image is a scan. When you look at a metalpoint drawing perpendicularly, it looks grey. It superficially resembles a drawing made with graphite pencils. When you look at the same drawing at an angle, it looks shiny.

The same drawing photographed at an angle.

These photos are intentionally underexposed in order to better capture the shiny surface of the drawing. I used gold an aluminum for this drawing, you can see where I used each metal, because gold has a golden hue, but aluminum is silvery. I used two different metals for a single drawing, because aluminum leaves darker marks than gold.

If you are already familiar with the metalpoint technique, you might be used to drawings looking very light and pale. I didn’t increase darkness and contrast for this image digitally in photoshop. This drawing really is darker than those made by other artists who use the metalpoint technique, because I used aluminum instead of silver (aluminum leaves darker marks), and I also used a ground that somewhat differs from those used by other artists.
